ROXBURGH MUNICIPAL RACES.

(To the Editor.) Sib, — Agreeably to my anticipations when I again arrived at the Teviot on my downward journey, the municipal races were over. The Mayoral Plate proved to be a walk-over for Honest John — L'Empereur's owner having negleoted to pay his acceptance,- was not permitted to run. On the second day's racing, tho Northern Plate terminated in a dead heat between Veritas and Faugh-a-Ballah ; the Southern Cup, a dead heat between P.B. and C.J. ; the Central Guineas, the same between Patch and Peter simple, who all divided the respective stakes. L'Empereur ran again in the Central Guineas ; but, in consequence of his jockey not having declared overweight, was decided by the judge to be distanced. L'Empereur's owner having heard that it is proposed to hold races of a similar nature at Tapanui, intends entering him at that place, where probably he will stand a better chance than at Rxbourgh. A change of jockey's might produce better results.— l am, &c, VIATOB. Ettrick, September 15th.

Some men never lose their presence of mind. In Milwaukee a man threw his mother-in-law out of the window from the fifth story of a burning building, and " lifted up tenderly" a featherbed, which he carried downstairs safely in his arms.
