Cr. Armstrong remarked that from a conT«mtion he had with Mr. M'Kellar, Goldfields Secretary, lately, he believed it was the intention .of the Provincial Government to make a small charge for the prison labor — say 3*. .oe 4e.*' a-day, a* much as their keep, and the Salary o i an officer to look after them might amount to. Cr. Walker, in reply, said he thought there was a groat deal more work to be done in- the town* than they could hope to get prisoners to do.* The motion was carried. Cr. Walker gave notice that at next meeting of the Council he would move : " That the water mains be extended from Lancasterstreet to Whitehayen-street. The Council then adjourned.
