JOTTINGS FROM ROXBURGH.
To-day Las been quite a gala day here ; it has been Court-day, and the celebrated case of Beighton v. Cornish was to come off. It did come off ; but it was such a complicated case that Mr. Simpson, the Warden, with his well-known judicial acumen, had to take time to consider the matter, and will give his judgment next Court-day, which, I think, will be on the 22nd proximo. I can assure you that this case has caused far more excitement at the Teviot than either the now-celebrated case of Macassey v. Bell, or the WardChapman case ; in fact, judging from the overcrowded state of the Court, and the number of people who, by ho possibility, could find accommodation within it, you might, by a slight stretoh of imagination, have imagined that the concluding act in the play or farce of " The Queen v. Tichborne alias Castro alias Orion," was about to come off.
I am glad to be able to inform you that the firm of Bichard, Forbes, and party arc in treaty with Messrs. Kincaid, M'Queen, and Co., of Dunedinj for the necessary iron work to enable them to convey the water from the Gorge Creek (about two miles below the Teviot) to the east side of the river, to enable them to work the ground on that side. The same party have a claim at Campbells, and could, had it not been for the legal obstructions, which appear to be purposely made to obstruct, have obtained water on the east side of the Clutha, at far less expense. lam glad that there are men who, in spite of the runholder's objection, and in spite, I may say, of any and every obstacle, are determined to persevere. I wish them the success they so richly deserve. T have also heard that It is Mr. Boi-ton's intention to sell out his interest in the Hereulc9 claims. The plans are already prepared for our Athenteum, and have been this day submitted to my inspection. It is croected that the Mayoral election will come off shortly ; in fact, I have been informed by a friend of mine here, who assures me that he " never told a lie," that the nomination day is fixed for next Wednesday ; -if so, there will be little work clone on the Teviot that day.— -I am, &c, Obseevbk* Roxburgh, August 2&.
