Correspondence.

THE ROXBURGH MAYORAL CUP. {To the Editor.) Sir, — While passing through the flourishing township (or shall I say city?) of Roxburgh the other day on my way to the Lakes, I was invited by some of the trainers there to view the various steeds now under their care and engaged to run ■at the foi'thooming races. I ,was first taken to the stable of Honest John ; but as he was suffering from a severe cold, caught through having been taken out too early one frosty morning, and insufficient covering having been placed on him on his return from the gallop, I am not in a position to give a positive opinion on Ms merits; although, when in -condition, I should" take him to possess great staying powers. Being so heavily weighted, he is evidently thought highly of. Veritas, I understand, is giving his trainer great satisfaction, taking good long canters philosophically. Peter Simple and his stable companion, Ironsides, continue taking exercise daily, and are evidently in good condition, as they come home without a hair turned. 1 shall not expect to •^le them last. L'Empereur, a dark brown horse, more resembling a light draught than a racer, altough considered by some the favorite, is rather hardly dealt with by the handicapper, being too heavily weighted for the company he will be in, as several horses carrying lighter weights, if they run on their merits, can, I should think, easily distance him. The unpopularity, of his jockey in these parts goes a great way against him in the public Reeling. Being pressed for time, I was obliged to hurry on ; but I expect that before my return the news of the race having been run and won will be all^ver the country.— l am, &c., Viaxok. Clyde, August 19th.
