Wellington, July 27th. The official enquiry into the circumstances of the collision between the Mauawatu and the brig&ntiue Kate Brain was held to-day. The evidence was mainly to tl>e effect that each vossel did its utmost to avoid a collison. A meeting of persons interested in the licensing laws was held to-day, and a Committee appointed to draw up a petition against the proposed amendment by Mr. Fox ia support of the Premier's Bill. The Ward-Chapman Committee have got an extension of time of fourteen days to bring up their report. Judge Ward is on his way up. Auckland, July 27th. The butchers have raisod the price of meat a penny per lb., owing to the scarcity of meat, and threaten to increase it to eightpence, unless cattle steamers commence running in the place of those withdrawn. Captain Andrews, of the s.s. Ladybird, reports seeing a comet to the eastward with a tail five or six degrees in length. After being closed for more than a year, lands in Southland were open yesterday for selection at £1 and £3*per acre. A large area was applied for, the laud office being busy all day. Bluff, July 30th. The brig Carl, from Lyttelton to the Bluff, lias struck on a root at the mouth of the harbor. The rock appears to have gone her bottom, and the wreck was abandoned. The brig is insured in the New Zealand office.
