The reports of the daily papers with reference to the female immigrants by the Caroline are now said to be much too severe and sweeping. The remarks of the Captain to the newspaper reporter.3 were never intended to convey a general meaning, but only referred to particular passengers.
July 15, 9.20 a.m.
Wellington telegrams .state that it is reported on good authority that the Government will propose to pension off Judge Chapman, Chief Justice Arney, and Dr. Featherston. Judge Ward will succeed Judge Chapman, and the Attorney General will probably succeed Judge Arney. Mr. Russell will probably succeed Dr. Featherston.
Colonel Brett intends to introduce a bill into the Council to abolish the volunteer establishment.
Copies of the now celebrated telegrams from Judge Ward to the Premier re Chapman's order for production of tele- ! grama in Macassey v. JBell were laid on the table of tKe Htmae. Messages to and
daily papers, and are evidence that the telegrams before published by the "Daily Times'' are substantially correct. Mr. Yogel last night moved the second reading of the Supreme Court Judges' Bill, and said it was introduced chiefly through the projected retirement of tho Chief Justice.
In the Legislative Council, Mr. Waterhouse moved a motion of which he had given notice regarding the increasing debt of the colony. Dr. Powell moved tho previous question, stating that if he foU lowed Mr. Waterhouse through, his arguments he would have to disclose the policy of the Government, which would be more properly done when the Financial Statement was made in the other House. The previous question v/as carried. Wellington, July 14.
Tenders will be called in a fortnight for the first section of the BalclutkaMataura railway.
The Gold Duty Repayment Bill was disallowed. Had the Otago Government favored it, it would have passed.
Mr. Bradshaw presented a petition from Dunedin praying that the Distillery Act should not be amended. Tairoa moves for a Select Committee
to inquire into liia claims. Mr. Yogel laid on the table the WardChapman correspondence. Mr. Gillies moved the appointment of ft Select Committee to inquire into Judge Ward's telegrams, and their publication in the " Daily Times ;3}; 3} the said Committee to consist of Messrs. O'Rourke, Atkinson, Fox, Richardson, Sheehan, Brandon, T. B. Gillies, Studholme, Wales, and the mover. .
