THE SAILORS' HOME.
The meeting convened by the Mayor was j attended by the Bishop of Dunedin (Dr Nevill), the Hon. Major Richardson, Revs. . Messrs Leeson and -Edwards, Mr Fish. ] M.P.0., Captain 'ihomson (Harbor Master), ] Messrs Walter, Graham, Mudie, Stout, < M.P.C., Strode, Captain Clark, «c. The ' Mayor presided. * . Mr R. B. Martin sketched the constitu- j tion of the horne — the institution to consist j of a president, vice-president, trustees, treasurer, committee of management, honorary ] physician, cbaplaiu, secretary, master, and | matron ; the name of the institution to be "The Dunedin Sailors' Home;" the design of \ theinstitution to be to provide a suitable home for the seamen of the mercantile service \ trading to tuis port ; to provide maintenance and a comfortable home for the seamen while . on shore ; no infirm or diseased person to be ] admitted ; subscribers of half-a-guinea to be ent tied to vote at the election of officers ; . owners and masters of ships subscribing , ( clergymen preaching ami collecting, and ( mercantile firms contributing --,to be also entitled to vote. He suggested that tbe j Su; enntendent should be nominated Presi- j. dent, and Mr Strode, who came from sailor t stock, Vice-President. < aptain Fox, of the » Scimitar (who apologise^ for his non-attend- t ance), had forwarded, a subscription of L 55 collected on board his sbip — (Rear. ) f Mr Fish siid i> was premature to appoint }. office-bearers, and suggested that a provi- v sional committee should be appointed. One 8 member of the Provincial Council bad ex- j pressed his willing' ess to hand over half of t his honorarium (L 24) in aid of the Home, c and no dtouot the example would b« fol- a lowed. He moved " That a Committee, E consisting of Captain Clark, the Mayor of c Dunedin, Messrs E. B. Cargill, Ritchie, R. i B. Martin, Ramsay, Stout, Captain Thomson, c Street, Tewsley, Walter, Strode, Black, W. „ F. A heeler, Walcott, Prosser, Rattray, Turnbull, Houghton, G. F. Reid, Guthrie, a Brodrick, and the mover, be formed for the j purpose of collecting subscriptions, drawing a up a code of rules, an ( reporting to a meet Q ing of subscribers to be called a fortnight c hence." Carried unanimously. The Bishop op Dcnkdin" expressed his j intention of doing all he could to further the c muvtmeut. g ihe meeting cloned with a vote of thanks c to the Chairman.
