THE STINKS ABOUT LAWRENCE. {To the Editor.)
SlB, — I propose, with your permission, to draw the attention of the public in general and the Inspector of Nuisances in particular to th« various nuisances existing in our midst* If you will allow me to use your columns for this purpose from time to time, I trust it may have the effect of improving, the sanitary state of the town, as I shall not confine myself to finding fault with things as they are, but I will endeavor to point out a remedy in each case. I will begin first with what I call public nuisances, that is, those occuring on the public streeta^Government and Municipal reserves, &o. This will give 1 private individual* time to mend their ways ; but if they do not, I shall assuredly hold up to public cetwure the conduct of any individual who may allow a nuisance to exist on his premises, whereby his own or his neighbor's health may be imperilled. To begin with stink No. 1. I think no one will deny that the filthy green pond at the. junction of Ardrossan-street and the Beaumont road is a disgrace to a civilised comjnuxdljv There it enough liquid poison
there to kill every man, woman, and child between here and Dunedin ; but, I think, the experiment ought first to be tried on some of the members or the Lawrence Town Council. I notice also a pig-sty, built entirely on the street, just above the pond. lam told that it belongs to one of our Town Councillors. The pig-sty is so arranged that the drainings run into the pond referred to, thus always keeping up the liquid poison to its full strength.
The remedy I suggest is to remove the pigsty and fill up the pond with day — not sand or gravel. . I think also some stringent regulations might be passed by the Town Council regarding the keeping of pigs within the town boundary.— l am, &c,
Valetudo.
