London, May sth. The Pope has raised Melbourne to an Archbishopric, under the Rev. Dr. Goold, the present Bishop. Ballarat and Sandhurst have both been formed into Bishoprics, the former under Dr. O'Connor, and the latter under Dr. Fortune. Dr. Redwood has been appointed Bishop of Wellington. May 6th. The Two Thousand Guineas Race was won by Lord Falmouth's Atlantic, Colonel Carleton's Reverberation second, Lefevre's Ecossais third. May Bth. The Lower House in Convocation has adopted resolutions adverse to the Archbishop of Canterbury's Bill to restrain clergymen introducing irregular practices into the Church. The colliers' strike at Durham has terminated, the men accepting a reduction of wages. I There is a prospect of a settlement of the agricultural lock-out through the medium of members of Parliament. May 9th. A fair inquiry exists for money at the Bank of England ; the reserve is stronger. The Stock Market is improving as the apprehension of dearness of money is subsiding. In the Wool Market, prices are without noticeable alteration. Eighty thousand bales have been sold. Arrived. — Douglas, Mendoza, Ben Ledi, Ben Nevis, Aireyforce, Celestial, and Empire. May 10th. The French press has been commenting on the recent debate in the House of Lords, arising out of Earl Russell' 3 question as to the prospects of the maintenance of peace, and the Earl of Derby's reply affirms an earnest <les>ire on the part of France for peace to be maintained. It has been ascertained that the recent frosts have very considerably damaged the French vineyards. May 12th. The House of Lords has passed the Land Transfer Bill, and the second reading of the Archbishop of Canterbury's bill suppressing ritualistic practices in the Church has been agreed to. Renewed difficulties have occurred in the North of England" in the-iron and coal trades. Eight thousand ironstone workers struck yesterday. Colonel Warburton, of South Australia, gets the Victoria Medal of fche Royal Geographical Society, for recent explorations. London, May 33th. The Brindisi mail was* delivered in London on May 13th. The French Assembly has met, but the proceedings are only of a formal nature. Galle, May 12th. The Nubia left for Australia yesterday. The Baroda arrived to-day. Calcutta, May 13th. The Government are relieving two millions of famiue sufferers. Three hundred thousand tons of grain have : been served by the authorities. Piece , work is enforced from able-bodied men.
