Private advices from New Caledonia, regarding the escaped Communists, state that Rochefort was on tho Peninsula of Ducos; Jourde was employed in a butchery as cashier, and rendered his accounts correct to a centime before he left ; and Grousset was employed at St. John's circular saw establishment as architect, and was preparing a plan of a new theatre in Sydney, for the Exhibition. • He left a letter for his employer thanking him for his kindness, and stating that he had taken the plan of the theatre, and would see it was in the Exhibition. At Ilnou, a convict was guillotined for striking an officer, and another was condemned for the same offence. At Oubatche a man named Bateman, late of New Zealand, shot the Commandant for trying to elope with a girl, at one time a barmaid at the Greyhound Hotel, Auckland, who lived with Bateman as his wife. It is expected that Bateman will get off with three months' imprisonment. The Commandant lived twentytwo hours after being shot. Letters have been found from him, sending poison to the girl to give to Bateman. H.M.S. Pearl arrived at Noumea on 23rd April, and was to leave on the 27th. New Plymouth, May 19th. Tho Superintendent, in Council yesterday, read a telegram from Mr. Yogel, stating that it was proposed to stop free nominated immigration, except to nominated immigrants Mr. Carriugton replied that he thought till this Prevince had an equal share with other Provinces, that free immigration should not be stopped. He requested the G-overnment to cause the same numbers as sent to Napier to be. forwarded to Taranaki. He said no immigrants had been sent here, and there is a great cry out for labour. G-bbtmottth, May 29th. In the Cobden Police Court yesterday, Patrick Warren and John Warren, accommodation housekeepers at Ten-mile Creek, and James Fitzgerald, their servant, were charged with cattle stealing. Fifteen witnesses were examined, the evidence going strongly against the accused. They were committed for trial, bail being accepted for the two Warrens in two Burities of £250 each, and Fitzgerald two surities of £100 each. Auckland, May 20th. The Catholics are petitioning the Provincial Council for aid to erect schools for their denomination. Entries for the Produce events for the Auckland races from 1875 to 1878 are confined to a few owners, and have not reached expectations. The floods are now subsiding, and the damage is trifling, although the flood was higher than the one of 3 307. The Ngaruroro bridge is damaged, but the traffic is not stopped. Cbiustchttrch May 20th. The proprietors of the Press announce .their intention of publishing a new evening paper to be called the Globe. The first number appears next month. The attempt to form a new Insurance Company is supposed to be a failure. The proprietor of the " Star," an evening paper, announces his intention to increase it to double its present size next month. Bluff, May 21st. The s.s. Otago, Captain M'Lean, left Melbourne on the 14th inst., and arrived at the Bluff at 10 p.m. on the 20th.
