CENSUS RETURNS.

The following figures show the numbers of the population (exclusive of aboriginal natives) in the provinces of Taranaki, Wellington, and Canterbury, as ascertained by the census taken on the night of the Ist March of the present year : — Taranaki : Town of New Plymouth, 1,021 males, 1,026 females ; Grey and Bell, 996 males, 813 females; Egmont, 1,034 males, 593 females : making a total of 5,483 as compared with 4,480 at the taking of the census of 1871, thus showing an increase of 1,003. Wellington : In Wellington city there are 5,515 males, 5,162 females, as compared with 4,052 males, 3,856 female*, in 1871 ; at the Hutt there are 1,360 males, 1,132 females ; at the Wairarapa, 2,704 males, 1,900 females ; in Wellington country district, 1,543 males, 1,359 females; at Manawatu, 1,067 males/ 735 females ; at Eangitikei, 1,351 males, 990 females ; Wanganui, 2,690' males, 2,224 females : making a grand total for the province of 29,730, as against 24,001 in 1871. Canterbury: Christchurch, 10,282 males, 5,334 females ; Lyttelton, 1,579 males, 1,323 females ; Kaiapoi, 501 males, 501 females ; Timaru, 1,097 males, 914 females. These numbers are swelled by the population of the various up-country towns and seaports to a totals for— the^prorince of Oaßtflrbary ff£
