LAWRENCE TOWN COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Council was held in the Council Chambers on Monday evening. There were present — The Mayor and a full Council. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved of. A letter was received from Mr. Jeffery, Secretary to the Embankment Committee, asking the Council to receive a deputation from that body. On the motion of Cr. Hay, the Standing Orders were suspended. The deputation, consisting of Mr. Jeffery, Mr. Jamison, and Mr. Sheath, was then received, Mr. Jamison stated that the deputation which had, on a previous occasion waited upon the Council, had not had a distinct understand with them regarding who was to pay for the construction of certain culverts which the Engineer had included in the Boss Place Embankment plans, and also as to the proportionate share of the work that would be required at the ends of the streets. The plans and specifications had been submitted to the Council, by whom the deputation believed they had been approved. He might state that the culverts were much larger than required at present ; but he understood that the Engineer had in view future drainage works in contemplation by the Co"jioil. What the deputuation asked was that the Council should undertake the works referred to, as in the event of their not doing so, the Embankment Committee would put in culverts about one-fifth ths size given by the Engineer, but quite large enough for present re- j quirements. After iom» conversation, the Mayor in- | formed the deputation that the matter brought before the Council, wouLl havo its favorable consideration. The deputation then thanked the Mayor and Council, and withdrew. The Standing Orders were then resumed. Cr. Hayes moved, and Cr.
