WAIPORI.

(From a Correspondent.) There is not much, in the shape of news to write about from this quarter. Thetovrnship is beginning to wear quite a deserted appearance. Several of our moat important and enterprising business men are removing to the vicinity of the Drainage Channel, at the Lower Crossing township, that being the present scene of activity. Messrs. M'Cay Bros, have almost completed a Tery substantial and commodious store on the ground. There are also two Chinese stores in course of completion, to say nothing of the many buildings that are contemplated. Business men now on the. scene of operations are driving capital trades.. Mr. Lomas, who has a boarding house and store, is doing very well. There are no hotels on the ground a£ yet ; and the effects of Qpod Templary are strikingly visible. In coarse of time this may probably become the principal township. At present, there ia a. township formed of considerably dimension, and every probability of being increased to an unlimited extent. Towards thia end, I am informed that Mr. Pilling and others are gathering subscriptions relative to, the continuation of the present road down to the Lower Crossing — a distance of two miles. It will coat about £50 j and when completed will be of great service to the residents of this locality. la mining matter* everything is very dull at present. There are not m*ny claims at work altogether throughout the district. The yield of gold, as you will na doubt have observed in the escort returns, is not. very great. The Drainage Channel is progressing very rapidly, the weather during the past twoweeks being greatly in favor of the works Three of the river diversions are completed, and one or two others under way. There are,

at present, upwardß of 140jh&nda engaged on d. the Channel. Men continire v to ajrfive dailyj Vnd readily find employment;^" \While referring tjp mining ipnlrerally, I may Antion that a betyvjbi ' Celestials hare "»fblied for a 6-acre claim on. the course of thl Channel. It jwould he greatly to the diflaiTantftge of miners wire, Bnch eiteneiTe areae gj^antedVes^eoidlly ". to . Chinamen — takitf| into conai&eratiptt- the fact that there will b^ery trifling expense attached to opening fip^^im when the drainage of the Flat is comple&pd ; and consequently, at such a rate, ajl-tlie available ground would soon he in the hands of, a few. In my opinion, two acres are quiw sufficient -for any party of Six miners to- take posees»ioir-'Of-*t" OUW. If claims were confined to two_acres, a larger population.^ould find remujiewtive employ ment. I believe that the miners will not allow this application to pass without lodging an objection thereto. I shall defer any further remarks anehc tliia important subject until a future issue. The local Uoard of Wardens have 4 l5£S3— — ' number of applications for licenses to" depasture stock, for consideration at .their next meeting, which takes place on Thursday evening.
