After an explanation from Dr. Webster that he had been unsuccessful in firming a Ministry, Mr. Donald Reid, stated tiat he had, on Saturday, been sent for hy his Eonor,'and, after an interview with b,im this corning, he ha.d undertaken the tqsk oi forming an Executive, but th.at ho had not as yet had time to complete his arrangements, A motion for adjournment of (he House till toirorraw waa then carried... May 5, Mr, Reid has succeeded in forming a Government, Mr. Turnbull, Provincial Treasure? ; Dr. Webster, Secretary for Lands; Kr. LuinsJen, no.n-oju.eial; Mr. Reid, Provincial Secretary and Secretary fop Public i Vorks ; possibly Mr. Haggitt, Solicitor, nonpoditieal. Mr, M'KeUar (Cromwell) was ofered and refused office a.s CroldfJeUls Secre-> tary, The Squatting pa.rty conditioned Reid that Turnbull and Webster should be members of the Executive with promises of their support, Reid consented. This arrangement causes considerable dissatisfaction. The Council meets to-morrow. A telegram from the Shotover Terrace to-day states that the water was on last night, and likely to wash 2000 trucks this week. The caae M^cassey v. Bell is expected to last several days yet. A destructive fire broke out in Auckland at ope o'clock tbjs morning. The property burned down comprised a. block of wooden buildings in Queen-street. The da.ma.ge is estimated at from £10,000 to £15,000. May 6, 9,26 a.m. A fire occurved at CaY.ersham this morning, destroying two cottages and the Crown Hotel. It is understood that Law is the successful competitor for Richardson's scholarship. Applications for shares in the new bank are coming in. rapidly ; edready av«r 31,000 shares have been applied for, Mr, Stout opened the case for the defence in Macassey v. Bell yesterday, The day was principally occupied in hearing the evidence of Queenstown witnesses. The Alhanibxa is at Hokitika with later English news, but nothing of importance. CLYDE, May 6, 9.53 a.m. The Lawrence coach capsized this morning by coming in contact with a big stone just outside the. town. Tiiere- w*s a. fu& l^ftd of passengers, ojifi of whom was severely hurt, and waa taken to the Hospital — others slightly injured. The driyer's hand, was badly hurt. The coach was a little smashed, and another one was procured, and proceeded on the journey. A very dense fog is aaid to, be the cause of the accident.
