The Suez mail closes at the post-office. Lawrence, on the morning of the 10th inst. Thb adjourned licensing meeting was held yesterday. Our report of the business done is crowded out together with other local matter. A mbet^o was held &\ Mr. Jeffery's on Monday evening, for the purpose of re-forming the Lawrence Brass Band. A numerous assemblage pjf the youths of Lawrence put in an appearance. Mr. G. Morrison was palled to the chair. After a short address, in which he gave an outline of the working of the original band, he culled upon Mr. Jeffery to s.ta.te what the fleeting was called for. M,r. Jeffery then stated that it was the opinion of several of the inhabitants, that, haying the musical instruments on hand, it w.oftld be well to call u,pou the residents to, establish a band in our midst, and he was pleased to say that a- gentleman (Mr. H. Ennis) had come forward; and offered his services as bandmaster and instructor. It was then proposed and seconded that the following gentlemen forn* themselves into a Committee, •Btinely, Messrs. Squires, Morrison, Burn*, (^uin, and Jcffery (Secretary), to carry out the. wishes, o| the meeting. Carried. Mr, Kowe proposed, and. Mr. seconded, that the names of those present who wished to join, the band be taken down, and that they have power to add to their number. Carried. Brown presented a petition f ram- settlers in the Tuapeka and Waitahuna districts, praying that an enquiry should be made before steps are taken to open up a road in thai district. The road referred to is one that is proposed to be made through Mr. Grundy's farm. A MEETING was held in the Victoria Hotel on Monday afternoon, for the purpose of getting up a ball in Lawrence to celebiate the aunivert sary of the Queen's birthday. An influential Committee vaa formed, and it was resolved that circulars pf invitation be issued ; the ball to take plage in the Athenpeum on Monday, the 25th of May. Messrs. Whjte ano Party, on the Munrps side of the Blue Spur, are sinking a shaft in their claim to test the bottom ground. This company have ope of the largest areas on the Spui, and should payable gold ejtist over the bottom of their claim, they will have many years of profitable work before them. We are glad to aay that Donald M'ftae who met with an accident last week has so far recovered that he expects to leave the Hospital to-day, • A man named Joseph Martin met with an aocident on Monday last at Greenfield Station. It appears he was riding home a horse at the dinner b,our,and when crossing a gully the beast fell and broke Martin's leg below the knee, pi.
