MORE LAND WANTED AT CROOKSTON.
PUBLIC MEETINGS [ A meeting of the residents of the Crookston j district was held in the Crookston Hotel, Beaut mont Ferry, on Saturday evening last. There I was a largenumber of settlers and others present* Mr. George Hogera was called to the chair, and after stating the object of the meeting, several of those present expressed themselves strongly on the subject of memoralising the Government to get more land thrown open for settlement adjoining blocks I. and IV., which are already thrown open. It -vra9 stated and shown by a tracing that all the land included in block 1., excepting a small fraction, was already occupied, and that some 1500 acres of block IV. were also occupied, so so that the residents had a good claim upon the Government to hare more land thrown open* It was finally decided to draw up a petition embodying the want* expressed. The following memorial was afterwards drawn up, and is now being numerously signed by the settlers of the district and oth«s interested;-^ ■
"To th» Honorable the. Speaker and the _ members of. 'the Provincial Council of Otago. * M ,The petition Of the undersigned owners of < ■ land, occupiers of agricultural leases, and settlers in the districts of Crook■ton and Tuapeka, humbly sheweth— . ™1. That your petitioners have been residents in the above named districts during •weialjrears past, .and many of them have b»«i'«Mjrous to acqure'land* f or settlement, land others are yet seeking land with the same "S^That block 1., Crookston, containing tome 2500 acres, has been taken up, with the •xceptioa Of About 100 acres, for the above teamed purpose ; and in block IV. more than 1500 acres 'hare "Seen selected, and are now occupied by hona]fide settlers.*' "3. That with a view to procuring an in«r*a»ed area of country, a meeting of the inhabitants was. held on the 26th instant, at Dunkeld, when it was resolved to petition Souf Honorable House, to set apart certain lands for selection; either under the deferred payments,^ or', agricultural lease systems, or vndw any other system as may, in your wisdom, be lawful and fit to enable the inhabitant* to occupy the land for settlement. . "4. That your petitioners would respectfully recommend for the above purpose the •reaof countrj as shown on the, planherewith, andthe boundary Une thereof colored red, and commencing at the south-east corner of block L, Crookston district ; thence down %he Clutha Biver about li mile, to a point near Canons Flat ; thence following up the creek to Mr. M'Kellar's gate on tk»- saddle; thence in a line to the south-west corner of block 4, Croekston District ; thence in a line telong block 4, to the Teviot ; thence along theTeviot road to Mr. Clark's fenced freehold land, the Island Block ; thence following the said fence to the Clutha Eiver j thence down the Clutha River to the north-east corner of block 1., as aforesaid. "5". That your petitioners believe that at the present time, at least, one-half of the ■abovef-mentioned country is adapted for agritsuitnral purposes; and that should your Hojsjsable Council accede to their request to ©Pj^Lthe same for selection, a very large proporfi6n will shortly "be taken up and occupied. "6. That the boundaries, as proposed, will he a substantial benefit to the runhulder and Mttler, being in themselves a natural fence i and already defined.
