LAWRENCE TOWN COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Council was held in the Council Chambers, on Thursday evening last. There were present — The Mayor, and Ors. Armstrong, Hay, Arthui, and Ferguson. The minutes of the previous meeting and special meetings were read and confirmed. The following letter "was received from Dr. Halley. with thanks :—: — " Lawrence, April 27, 1874. . " Gentlemen, — Having had my attention ' arrested lately by the accounts of a recent outbreak of typhoid fever at Cromwell, and the great mortality following its invasion, it has occurred to me this would be the proper time to take such steps as might tend to check its ravages, should it unfortunately attack our district. " From the various reports of the fever at Cromwell, it WQuld appear to have been of a low type, and of such a type as especially finds its home in an ill-drained or ill-ventibfced town. "Now, I can not call our town»nip very deficient in either of these rcßp* c ts- Still, I think that as we have «n Inspector of Nuisances, he should bo specially charged at this time to make a rigorous survey of all back premises, and rigorously enforce clenli- . ness. "In walking through Lawrence on a still night, I "can recognise, if not with the traveller in Cologne, ' two and seventy,' yet a few — 'Stenches all well-defined, and several stinks,' each area from which such effluvia proceed, being a neat from which ferer may be hatched. " Trusting that I may have directed your attention to a very important »übject, " I beg to remain, " Very respectfully,^. " Ebbnbzeb HAtiSsis" f " To the Mayor and Councillors of " Lawrence."
