THE BAZAAR.

(To t/te Editor.') Sir, — Does the end justify the means ? is a question that arises iv the miiitl of a spcuta tor. In these days of progress, it is necessary to have recourse to the subtle fmeshes of a lottery to tempt people to give money for any good and laudable purpose. Tho church is in debt, and that debt must be liquidated. Certainly obey the injunction, " Owe no man anything j" and you must have money. The days of having everything in common exist no longer ; the days of miracles also are past and gone. These are the days of sectarianism and jealous rivalry. We must draw people's money from them unawares. We must hold up a tempting bait and say, " This may be your 3if you only cast in your mite." The same encouragement is held out to many, allured by the false hope of being the lucky possessors of the tempting gift. The coffers soon get filled, and one of the number, true, wins the prize. Tho others, still led on, try aud try again. Some, less hopeful, give up and swallow their disappointment for having spent so much money for nothing. Should there bo any regret if they studied the object to which it was devoted ? Certainly not ; which plainly shows that the object is in most cases not considered at all. If people prefer giving gifts instead of money, let them be disposed for a liberal price, and no doubt, with the object in view, those willing to help will give liberally, and thus can a blessing be expected to attend the means used to raise money for the church. — I am, &c, No Bigot.
