Ada C01t... ... ... ... 1 Parawhenua ... ... ... 2 Atlas ... ... ... ... 3 March 27In the R.M.s Court to-day, George Belcher and Alfred Drake were charged with assaulting and beating one Sinclair, who ha I hud a betting transaction with them. The row occurred near the Empire Hotel last night, and caused the assembling of an immense crowd of people, Sinclair having refused to pay the bet he had lost. The Magistrate, after severely lecturing Belcher, sentenced him to thirty days with hard labor. The charge against Drake was withdrawn. The Wallabi, with a number of the Scimitar iramicrants, sailed for Invercargill to-day. Captain Russell, on behalf of the New Zealand Insurance Co., is endeavoring to get the brigantine Kate Brain off the rocks at Mokomoko. A Wangamii telegram states that the Governor aud Lady Ferguson attended the native meeting at Tapucararu. His Excellency thanked the natives for the feast, and expressed pleasure at seeing the Natives and Europeans dwelling together amicably. March 28. Last night was the appointed settling night at the Empire Hotel, aud everything passed off satisfactorily. The bookmakers all coming up to the scratch. Divers are still at work on the Surat lifting j out cargo. The statement made by the "Daily Times" that Mr. Yogel intended to ask the General Assembly for a loan of £3,000,000, to monopolise the Polynesian Trade, is authoritively contradicted in Wellington. Captain Holman, master of the wrecked barque Anazi, has bolted by the steamer Star of South for Fiji. The Kate Brain has been floated off tbe rocks, and is now along side the Invercargill wharf. The third Intel-provincial Eegatta contest took place yesterday on the waters of the Waimakariri. There were five entries, viz.: — Illysus, Hokitika ; Stella, Wellington ; Dolly Varden, Wellington ; Cam, Kaiapoi ; Tyne, Christchurch ; Endeavor, Christchurch. Much to the surprise" of everybody, the Hokitika crew (which occupied the lowest place in the betting) came in winners ; Stella second, Dolly Varden third. The prize was £150.
