SWITZERS RACES.

(By otir Special Reporter.) The Switzers Jockey Club- annual woe* were held., on Thursday and FriSay last, the -sth and. 6th inst. > The weather \tas splendid, with justebfeeze enough to prevent the heat o£ the sun from proving uncomfortable. The attendance was folly equal jfco anyjl have seen of late years, and .the Bill of fare provided by our liberal Jockey, Club was,, sufficiently well contested to create a lively interest in each event. In of running, the horses were . much more equally matched, than they were last year,, and we had none of those walk-over* which give everyone concerned (the owners of horses included) a fit of lassitude.. Mr. H. N. Simeon -was the successful caterer for the . refreshment booth at £40 155., and Robert Kidd for the gate at £21. They were both liberally" patronised, and the refreshments provided were everything that could be desired. I understand Mr. Simeon is very well satisfied with the returns, even at the high figure quoted. A few of the " early ones," from Dunedin and elsewhere, were on the ground, evidently well provided with diceboxes and the other paraphernalia necessary for carrying on the "little game," and always ready to give or lay the odds on anything that ever stood on four legs. However, I fear the journey did not recoup them. They had been here before, and worked the claim, and the Switzerites had evidently a down on them; besides, Sergeant M'Nally was indefatigable in his endeavor to spoil their game, which was no sooner commenced than they were ordered to "move on ; " so they readily gave up it as not being worth the candle, and I scarcely think the same fraternity will again visit this locality. Mr. Frank Fielding, as usual, made an excellent starter ; and when I add that the decision of Mr. J. N. Wood, as judge, was not called in question when the difference only amounted to half a nose, you may conclude that the, officials rendered entire satisfaction. The following are the events : Maiden Plate, of 20 soys. For all horses that never won public money over £10. One mile and a quarter. Bailey's Turpin, 9st 61b (Monaghan) I Fauke's Curacoa, 9st 4lb (Dove) % White's Cromwell, 9st 71b (White) 0 Fielding's Marquis, 9st 61b (O'Keefe) 0 Fauke's Curacoa came in a very good first, but having run inside a post, a protest was lodged by Turpin's owner, who consequently got the money. Switzers Handicap, of 50 soys, with a sweep of 2 guineas; second horse to receive amount of sweep. One mile and a half. Lawson's Little Dan, 7st (Senior) 1 M'Kay's Kurawao, Bst lOst (Monaghan) 2 M-Ka/o Orphan, Bst 41b (Wiseman) 0 Morrison's Stackpole, lOst Bst (Rames) O Little Dan won hands down. Ladies' Purse, of 15 soys., with a sweep of 1 guinea. Two mile and a quarter. White's Sir Talton, 12st 101 b (White) 1 Lawson's Firetail, 12st lib (Lawson) 2 Morrison's Stackpole, 12st lib O Farrell's Maniototo, list 51b O Bailey's Leamington, 12st lib O Firetail made it hot for the favorite, Sir Tatton, and came in a very good second. Hack Selling Race, of 10 sove. Mile heafs. Winner to be sold for £10. No weight under 9st. For this event four horses started, the most of which never owned a name- before, Flying Scud eventually becoming the winner, Waikaka having gone lame. The winner was sold for ten guineas. Second Dat. Handicap Hurdle Race, of 20 soys. Tw<> mile 3 and a half. Over nine flights of ■hurdles 3ft. 6in. high. M'Eay's Don Pedro . i White's Sir Tatton • % This was a splendid race throughout, and I imagine a little over- confidence on the part-of Sir Tatton's jockey at the finish lost him th* race. Waieaia Handicap, of 70 soys. Twomile3. The winner of Switzers Handicap to carry 71b extra. Lawson's Little Dan, 7st lib \ Lawson's Firetail, Bst 61b 2 Morrison's Stackpole, 9st 101 b 3 M'Kay's Kurawao, Bst lib O White's Sir Tatton, 9st 21b O Farrell's Maniototo, 7st 81b Ot Little Dan won by a couple of lengths. DirrniCT Handicap, of 15 soys. One mil* and a quarter. Fauke's Curacoa, 10st71b 1 Matheson's Lady of the Lake, Bst 2 Scott's Sambo, 7st O Ferguson's Spitfire, 4st 101 b • O This race was an easy Victory for Curacoa. Consolation Handicap, of 15 soys. One mile and a half. Morrison's Stackpole, 7st. 1 M'Kay's Kurawao, 6st 12lb 2 Ferguson's Spitfire, 6st . S M'Kay's Orphan, Bst 0 Bailey's Leamington, Bst 0 In this race Stackpole had it all his own way. For the Hubby Scitbbt seven started. It was won by Morrison's Welcome. A protest was lodged by Messrs White ano\^ Morrison against Mr. Lawson's horses running, they having been disqualified at Invercargill. A summoned meeting of the Jockey Club will decide the matter on Thusday night. I venture to risk the opinion that the grounds are not suficienfc to maintain the protest. The fact deserves mentioning and is one well worthy of imitation, that before leaving Switzers on Sunday, Mr. Lawson handed in to the secretary of the hospital £5, to the secretary of the school £5, and to the Jockey Club fuud for the insuing year £3. Not the slightest accident occured on either day to mar the jollity of the proceedings.
