Owing to an extra pressure on our ipace, we are compelled to hold, over our report of the Presbyterian Church anniversary, which was held on Wednesday evening, oar leading article, our Dunstan correspondent's letter, a communication from Mr. J. E. Thompson, and some local matter,

The installation of officers of Lodge St. Qeorge, 1128, E.&, Lawrence, took place in the Lodge room on Thursday evening. There was a very good turn-out of the brethern. Bro. Williams was duly installed into the office of Worshipful Master by P.M. Bro. Nathan of Dunedin, assisted by Bros. Budge and Bryant, P.M.s of Lodge St. George. The following office-bearers " were also installed :— Bro. A, Alexander, S.W.; Bro W. H. Cox, J.W.; Bro. Meyer, Treasurer ; Bro. Armtsrong, Secretary , Bro.E. Tiohener, S.D.; Bro. G. Jeffery. J.D.; Bro, J. Middlemiss, 1.G.; Bro. T. Arthur, Tyler. After the imposing ceremony was conoluded, the brothers adjourned to the diningroom of the Commercial Hotel, where Bro, Armstrong had an excellent spread in waiting for them. The usual Masonic toasts were proposed with great enthusiasm, and the evening was passed in a most convivial manner.

The usual sports will take place on the race course on St. Patrick's Day. A good programme has been provided, and the services of the Provincial Brass Baud we are informed have been secured to enliven the proceedings.

The Wild Deer, from Glasgow, arrived at Port Chalmers on Thursday with 212 immigrants.

Mr. Watson is the successful tenderer for the excavation of the site of the Lawrence Court-house. He is prosecuting the work vigorously, and as soon as his- contract is completed, Mr. Humphrey will proceed with the election of the building.

Mr. Grace, of the England Eleven, confesses that he has been thoroughly surprised at the advance which cricketing has made in these Colonies. In regard to bowling, Grace says that Allan, of the Melbourne team, is the best in the world.

The Inspector, to hia suaprise, was requested by t Mr. Bathgate to put his finger on the statute authorising a Coroner thus to commit any prisoner for trial. This the Inspector declined doing, and after a short adjournment of the case, ..and. .further conference, the hearing was adjourned for a week." . A letter from a correspondent signing himself "Q" appears in Wednesdays "Times", as follows: — ' For his Mr Bathgate's informatiQn and instruction, I beg to inform him thas' the power is given in the Coroners Act, 186% and if I remember rightly the section ,is the eighth." .. ' - .-From Auckland telegrams we learn that the ship Splendid from New York, for Dunedin, owned by Messrs. John Cormack and party, sprung a leak, and returned to port.
