TUAPEKA HOSPITAL,

{To. tJu Editor.)

Sic. — I have on several occasions lately heard individuals make tlic remark that they would not subscribe to the Hospital funds this year on account of the committee having appointed a paid collector who- was to receive 10 per cent commission on the subscriptions. None but overgrown babies would urge such an objection as that against subscribing to one of our most valued institutions. If by the appointment of a paid collector the funds had decreased some reason might be shown that Mr. Hay's appointment h&d been a failure, but when the contrary is the oa-<e — when it will be shown by the pamphlets that a large increase in the subscriptions has taken place during the past year, I think it will be admitted that the appointment of a paid collector has admirably suited the purpose the committee had in view. Great credit is due to Mr. Hay for the manner in which he has fulfilled the duties of the office. I have no hesitation in saying a better man could not have been found for the work, my only fear is that the 10 per cent received by him ■has been but j>bor compensation for the time

the work has Occupied, and the energy he has i displayed. I would recommend these narrowminded individuals who demur to give a small subscription on the ground stated to the Hospital to start a list themselves. They would find that instead of 10 per cent it would cost them 25 per cent. The conclusion I have come to with regard to these miserables I am writing about is that they are only too glad to get an excuse for not parting with a few shillings. — I am &c. Membeb op Committee.
