LAWRENCE GRAMMAR SCHOOL.
An adjourned meeting of the Committee of the aboye school was held in tho schoolhouse on Monday evening. Present : Mr. M'Coy (President) and Messrs. Squires, Thompson, Abel, Menzies, and Hayes (Secretary). The meeting adjourned to allow the members of Committee time to consider the ciicular received from the Education Board) asking for suggestions on the subject of school fees.
After some discussion, the Rev. Mr. Menzi«§ moved, "That in consequence of the unpunctuality experienced in the payment of fees, and in view of the large sum of £83 of arrears being due for the same, an inducement .of 10 per oent. should be offered to parent* who pay in advance." Mr. Squires seconded tbe motion, although he was doubtful of the effect it would have. Mr. Abel said they must keep in mind* while they were prompted by generous feelings, the necessity of making both ends meet. Mr. Hayes stated that the school -was invariably in debt. He thought they should first see that punctual payments were made before reducing the fees. The school was now £70 in debt to the bank. The motion was put and carried. Mr. Stenhouse, the rector, said that during the last three years in no case had more than 4s. a week been charged, however large the family might be. In a family the fourth child goes free. Mr. Hayes considered the present arrangement more than liberal. On the. suggestion of Mr. Abel, it was agreed to instruct the Secretary to inform the- ■ Education Board that it had been usual to confine th© total amount of fees payable by any one family to 4s. per week, and that the fourth child in each family had;been educated free. Mr. Squires thought, if the Committee did not go further; their, suggestion would not be satisfactory to the Board. He therefore moved, "That in view of the liberal al* lowance made in the case of large families, and of the discount offered in payxnent-of fees in advance, the Committee cannot suggest any further reduction, in the school feeß." He would have liked some definite suggestions from Mr. Stenhouse.-aa the Committee weregoing more upon opinion than anything elsa. He thought, if they made any further reducsions, they might as well sweep away the fees altogether. He considered the cause of arrears was attributable to want of punctuality and self-denial. The motion was seconded and carried. Mr. Hayes then moved, "That the Rev. Mis, Menzies, a,nd Messrs. Squires and Abel be appointed a Sub-Committee to draw up a report based upon the resolutions passed, to be forwarded to the Education Board. Mr. Thompson seconded the motion, which was carried." Mr. Abel moved, "That the resolutions passed at this special meeting be considered as suggestions for the use of the Education Board, and made in compliance with the request contained jn the circular received from, the Board.'* Mr. Thompson seconded the motion, -which was carried. This concluded the business of the nieeting*
