LAWRENCE TOWN COUNCIL.
The usual meeting of the Council waa held in tie Council Chambers on Monday evening. Present : — E. Herbert, Esq., Mayor ; and Councillors Hill, Hay, Armstrong, and Hears.
The minutes were read, and after some discussion confirmed.
A letter was received from Mr. G. Jeffery, Secretary of ■ the Ross Place Embankment Committee, stating that a deputation would ■ wait upon the Council. A. letter was received from Mr. VV Pyie, asking the Corporation that the, lqase of section 4, block XL, be made out in Mr. J. Q. Brown's name instead of his own, the section having been purchased by Mr^ Brown. The Town Clerk informed the Council that the lease had already been prepared in Mr-. Pyke's name. Resolved that Messrs. Pyke and Brown be communicated with on the subject. A letter was received from Mr. J. Crawford asking permission to quarry stone in the Cor-
poratiori reserve, from thft <&*&***** opened by Messrs. Downie and Detert. Granted, subject to the control of- the Public Works Committee. " An account was received from .Messrs. Ai andT. Burt, £13 12s. 6d v id "hydrant and appliances. Referred to the Public Worki and Finasnee Committees. > A report wia received frdm the Public Works Committee' in reference to Mr Nichol's contract for filling in the creek frontage of Downie and Detert's contract. The Committee stated Ijbafc after inspecting the same, they believed the work had been well done, and would successfully resist any flood. They therefore recommended that Mr. Nichol's, be paid ,the amdupt due.,upon the same as per agreement. With regard to the matter- of a fire plug to be placed at the corner of Ross Place and Peel-street, the Committee were not at present in a position to pronounce upon the same, but the Town Clerk had communicated with Dunedin to ascertain particulars as to cost of performing the work named. A letter was reseived from the Town Clerk stating that he had commenced collecting the rates for the current year, and, with, a few exceptions, he was promised payment within a month. Letter received. A deputation from the Ross Place Embankment Committee, consisting of Messn. Sheath and Jeffery, waited on the Council, "^ and produced plans and specifications of proposed works. These gentlemen explained what steps had been taken in regard to the works, "and mentiehed the desirability of having a bridge erected in Derwent-street over the Wetherstones Creek, and also culverts built along the embankment at the same time the retaining wall was being proceeded with. .The Council entirely coincided with the views of the deputation, and offered every assistance in their power to carry out the works. It was resolved that the Government be immediately communicated with on the subject. The deputation here withdrew. Some conversation then ensued on thd drainage question, more particularly as regards the culverts mentioned by the deputation. The Mayor handed in an estimate prepared by G. M. Barr, Esq., C.E. That gentleman estimated the cost at £1170. The letter was laid on the table for further consideration. Reports 8 and 9 from the Finance Committee were received and adopted. A letter was received from Mr. Lawaon, stating that conditions of contract would bd forwarded at an early date. In reference to the appointment of a clerk of works, Mr. Lawson thought it would be advisable to waiTV. till the Courthouse was commenced, bo as to " get one man to supervise the erection of both buildings. A telegram was then read from Mr. Lawson, stating that the documents referring to the Town Hall woidd arrive in Lawrence on Tuesday. Cr. Mears moved that the hydrant and hose be placed in charge of the surfaceman), and that lie be instructed to water the street* when required. The Council then adjourned.
