CLYDE AUCTIONEERS.

(From a Correspondent) I see by a paragraph in the "Cromwell Argus " of January 20th, that an objection on the part of Messrs Chappie and Fache was made to Mr. T. Stranbrook's application for *uctioneer's license on several grounds — first, 'that the said T. Stanbrook " is in partnership with Wm. Eames, who is holder of a general publican's license for the Dunstan Hotel CHyde." -Second, on the assumption that Messrs. Eames and. Stanbrook are partners in the said hotel, from the fact of Stanbrook .serving liquors behind the bar; third, that •fitanbrook has not, nor ever had, any holding -at Cromwell. I do not for one moment hesitate to say, when our two district knights •of the hammer were concocting these extraordinary black-looking objections that . they had the strongest desire that everything should be kept strictly private and confidential ■•specially when they contained such .an amount of Animus, which was, calculated to .act in a very predjndical manner towards a brother in trade. But no ; our wise legislators 'were not to be got at in this crafty manner. They arrived at the conclusion there most -be something rotten or unwholesome in the objections made by Messrs. Chappie and Jjache ; so they returned cepy of the objections' letter tp Mr. I. Stanbrook for explanation. It is ' very amusing to think how the one; could really dupe the other thus far, -as to induce iim to sign a document purporting to be reliable authority -for the Government to be guidei by, when' at, the same time it is so^ thoroughly known by both Messrs. Chappie \nd Fache as" well as the general public that Mr. T. Stanbrook has no •connection directly \p indirectly with Mr. Wm. Eames in his licensed house alluded to by Messrs. Chappie and v Fache. On several •occasions Mr. Eames hae b^en from home and . appointed Mr. Stanbrook to, manage jkis business in his absence, but hew Messrs. •Chappie and Fache can,, construe that friendly ■accommodation into making "Mj\ Stanbrook partners with Mr. . Eames in %c Dunstan Jiotei is beyond, my comprehension - perhaps t/they will explain -it. I have always be«n aware *that the very best of feeling existed between Messrs. Chappie and Fache, and they have been put down as shining lights to other Ijosiness men ; so Ido not blame them at all for being anxious to monopolize the business ' <6f the district. They have been at all times iiieely dovetailed into one another's ways of •working ; so much so that seme time ago when " the Ovens, Water Race was advertised for sale, Mr. Fache having a large financial--interest in the same, Mr. Chappie knowing this, at once stepped forward with ; the purest motives of brotherly love, * -and offered his services to the company tp • 'Bell their whole plarit for -just about one-half ,'• lees than .the usual charge of auctioneers, that ■thereby Kjs brother Tache' would be a, considerable gainer by th& low commission. It ' " is~alw»ys ;the safest plan to adopt to have two sides 'of .a story. One good turn deserves another, bo perhaps Fache thought it would 1 "please Chappie to go band in hand with him jn objecting to the granting of Stanbrook's license. In conclusion, I may inform Messrs ' Cfcapple and Fache, with all their pre- ' tentions fco business unity, that they have now ' gdt keen and legitimate competition to contend against. Mr. Stanbrook is a thorough business man. He has not only obtau-d hi 8 -general auctioneer's license, but he has i» en J 'appointed auctioneer to the Government fpi th» Dunstan district. Mr. Stanbrook has '*aow been living amongst us over 11 years, .and T may say be has gained the thorough roonfidence and respect of all parties he has 4on*bana«»^ith. ,
