LAWRENCE TOWN COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Lawrence Town Council was held in the Council Chambers on Monday evening, at 8 o'clock. Present : Crs. Hay, Hayes, Hill, and Armstrong. Crs. Mears and Walker took their seats after part of the business had been disposed of. Cr. Hay was called to tho chair. The following accounts were dealt with :—: — T. Cleary, labor, £2 Bs.; D. Cochran, labor, £2 7s. 6d.; A. Armstrong, rent and Governor's lunch, £17 55.; H. Tolford, 2 buggies 2 days, £8 Bs.; R. Nichol's account for 80 yards stone at os., £20, was objected to by Cr. Hill on the following ground, viz.: — Cr.. Walker had stated to ti,e Council that Mr. Nicbol waa prepared to give a guarantee a3 to the permancy of the work, and he had, up to the present time, failed to do so. Cr. Hill moved that the account be referred to the Public Works Committee ro report upon it at next meeting. Seconded and carried. An application from the Town Clerk for some consideration for the time occupied by him in surpervising the cleaning of the reservoir was received.
On the motion of Cr. Hill, the application was referred to the Public- Works Committee, with power to act. Finance report — £25.17 a. 6d.-*-was received and adopted. Cr. Hay vacated the chair in favor- of Cr-. Hill, to enable him to move the motion of which ho hal given notice at previous Council meeting. Cr. Hay then moved, " That a fire plug be placed between the Bank of New South Wales and Mr. Harris' shop." There was a sufficient quantity of piping in the possession of the Coporation, and he considered the extra plug would be a great convenience in the case of fire.
Cr. Hayes seconded the motion. Cr. Mearß moved an amendment. Cr. Hay should have given the Council some idea of the cost of a plug in the place he wishes it. It would require a special casting in the form of a joint made before the pipes could be carried across the street, and he did not think the Council were justified in going to tuat expense. He would be in favor of an expenditure of £20 for an additional piece of hose, which he felt confident would meet the case in point, and he moved an amendment accordingly. Cr. Walker seconded the amendment. He considered the money required according to Cr. Hay's proposal, would be neither more nor less than thrown away. Tho hose now in the possession of the Council reaches all the property in the neighborhood referred to by Cr. Hay. In other parts of the town, the pipes are not laid, and the water, as all were aware, was not yet purified. Cr. Mears pointed out that before the mains could be extended, special castings would be required. The Chairman then put tho amendment, which was carried. Cr. Armstrong recommended a thorough overhauling of tho hose ; and Cr. Hayes suggested that a letter should be sent to Messrs Burt, reminding them of the communication forwarded by the Council respecting hydrants, &c. The Council then adjourned.
