(From tlie JDunedin Dailies. ) Hokitika January 14th. The s.s Tararua, Captain Clark from Melbourne, arrived at Hokitika at 5 o'clock last evening and was tendered at 9 o'clock this morning. She brings 29 saloon and 41 steer.-' age passengers ; also 233 tons of cargo for all ports. She sailed north at 9 this morning. * London, January sth. A reduction of discount is expected. St. Petebsburg, January 4th. The Duke of Edinburgh has arrived. Melbourne, January Bth. The Twenty-tTro at Ballarat made the very creditable score of 274 in their one innings, and the match then resulted in a draw. To-day the Eleven commenced their third match in the colony — at Stawell against Twenty-two of the district. Nearly all Ministers are absent from town. Political news is therefore dull. Governor Bowen is still in Tasmania. The match at handball, between Melboxirne and Sydney players, comes off on the 25th. Bevenue returns issued last night show an increase of £92,456 on the quarter, and £137,112 on the year. The principal increase is from the Customs and public works. Arabella G-oddard is likely to return from the East and proceed to New Zealand on account of her health. No concerts will be given in India. The February steamer, Bangalore, "will go direct through from Melbourne to SouthI ampton. ! One child was drowned in the Surrey paddock accident on the Ist. Christchttbch, January 15th. Advices received by cablegram yesterday i informed the New Zealand Shipping Co. that ! the demand foremigrant passengers had largely increased, in consequence of the adoption of the free nominated system. The agent of the Company in London, owing to the scarcity of ships, had arranged with the Albion Shipping Co. and Messrs. Shaw, Savill, and Co, to carry somo of the emigrants. The. New Zealand Co. have despatched during December eight ships, including the Mongol. s.s., which is expeoted -alone to carry 600. Kelson, January 15th, The Tararua brings a supplemenary English mail, ex P, And O. steamer Ellora, with English dates to November 14th. The "Examiner" c ased publication' thia morning. It was the oldest paper in the colony, having first appeared in March, 1842.
