ALEXANDRA.
{From our own Correspondent.) January 2nd, 1874. The holidays are nearly over, and the people in the district are preparing to resume their every day occupations. Christmas week passed very quietly with us, a good many of the residents visiting the Cromwell races. Our annual race meeting was held on New Year's Day, and was very successful, there being a pretty fair attendance of the people in. the district, besides a sprinkling of strangers. Mr. River's Wild Manx Boj won the two principal events, to the gratification of the Alexandraites, who do not fancy being always beaten on their own race- course. I append the details of the various events. Maiden Pulte, of £7 10s.; distance, 1 mile. One of our oldest residents, Mr. George' Erans. who has carried on business in the township for a number of- years, has left for old country. ' Prior to hiflVdeparture, he was entertained by a nnmW . of hip friends' at Jkntid Bejftdigo. Hotel. . : "Mr.| ». . IFinlay1 Finlay «6oui>i9<r me' ph'air, In tlie .course ,'oT'the lini^g/^jChairman; on behalf of the friends
of Mr. Evans, presented him tritlra Hand some set .of gold etudg as a token of remembrance. Mr. Evans, in acknowledging the gift, said that he had not expected any- i thing of the kind to take place, and he 'could only say that as long as he lived he would not forget his old friends in the district, with whom he had spent many happy daya. A very pleasant evening was spent, enlivened by some excellent singing by Messrs. Beattie, Fjnlay, Vause, and other gentlemen. ' On New Year's Day an accident happened to Mr. Peter M'Kay, of Butchers Gully. While driving a buggy between Nieper's Hotel and Alexandra, the horse began to plunge violently. Mr. M'Kay jumped down from the buggy for the purpose of trying to quieten the horse, but unfortunately got thrown down, , and dislocated his shoulder. He was removed to the Hospital, and the dislocation was' reduced by Dr. Striling. On New Tear's night we had a perfect glut of amusements. At the Royal Mail, Mr. Fred. Clifton and Miss Fanny Sara gave their entertainment to a full house, who loudly applauded the performers. At the Criterion, Mr.' Weston, the celebrated billiard player, astonished the natives with his fancy strokes ; " while at the Geelong Hotel, host Robertson wound up the overling's amusements with a ball and supper in- the new building which he has erected. The interior of the building is not quite completed, but by the aid of flags, evergreens, &c., the ball room had quite a tasteful appearance, and its large size allowed plenty room for the dancers to exercise their art, which they did with good will " till daylight did appear." I hope all this excess of dissipation may not cause any injury to our usually quiet neighbors. Of course in some places it would not be of much consequence, but not being accustomed to such excitement we might not be able to stand it. However, as we will have twelve months of perfect repose before there will be .anything else to disturb us, there are hopes that we may pass through the ordeal without evil results.
