WAIPORI RACES AND ATHLETIC SPORTS.
The above took place on New Year*s Day, and they were fairly attended considering the weather in the early part of the day, but the sun shone out "fine in the afternoon. The athletic sports were but poorly contested — , It. Tuckey winning most of the prizes as he liked. The horse racing' was not of a first class order. Everthing passed off quietly. Mr. James Vial had the booth, and did a good stroke of business. We append a list of the various events. Maiden Piatb, of 5 soys. Distance, 1J mile ; weight for age. Mr. Robertson's Kitty (Tuckoy) 1 „ M. Hunt's Lord O'Neil • (Caffell) 2 „ «W. Cox'b Wanganui (Henderson) 3 Won easily. Town Plate Handicap, of 8 soys. Distance, 2 miles. Mr. Cotton's Fairy Queen (Owner) 1 „ Buchanan's Bobby (Mills) 2 „ Robertson's Kitty (Tuckey) 3 Kitty was leading the first time round, when she fell, fortunately without injuring the rider, who again mounted but could not overtake the other two. Fairy Queen won easily. Publicans' Pttesb, of 6 soys. Mile heats. Mr. S. Henry's Steam Engine (Caffell) 11 „ M. Hunt's Lord O'Neil (Mills) 2 2 „ J. Wright's Furious (Tuckey) 3 3 Steam Engine won both heats in a canter. Consolation Stake, of 4 soys. Distance, mile heats. Mr. Buchanan's Bobby (Tuckey) 1 1 „ M. Hunt's Lord O'Neil 2 2 The first heat was well contested ; but in the second, Lord O'Neil threw his rider, Bobby winning as he liked. 100 Yards Foot Race. — Ist Prize, £1 ; 2nd, 10s.— M. Robertson, 1; G. Mills, 2. Five started. Vaulting-. — Ist prize, £1 ; 2nd, 10s. — R. Tuckey, 1, at 6ft. 6in. ; W. Hay, 2. Four competed, Running High Leap. — Ist prize, £1 ; 2nd, 10s.— R. Tuckey, 1 ; P. Haynes, 2- j Four competed. Hop, Step, and Jujip. — Ist prize, £1 ; 2nd, . 10s.— Tuckey, 1 ; T. Brougham, 2. 250 YAKDS "Rack. — Ist prize, JSI ; 2nd, 10s. —Mills, 1 ; Tuckey, 2 ; G. Raynes, 3. The race ball, held in Cotton & Henry's in the evening, was largely attended. Mr. Smith presided at the harmonium in his well known excellent style. This ball was one of the most enjoyable ever held at Waipori. Dancing was kept up till long after dawn of day, every one on leaving expressing themselves thoroughly satisfied with their amusement.
