BEAUMONT RACES.
The above races were held on New Year's Day. From a racing point of view they were -anything but a success, owing J;o the want of competitors. , A really good programme was ' issued by the Committee, but horses were not forthcoming to run for the money. There were very few entries .made one the night appointed, and therefore it was decided to make ' all entries, with the exception of one handicap, post entry. Even then the horses were not forthcoming, and consequently the stewards had to do their best to get off a few of the smaller events, leaving out the £25 handicap altogether. At an early hour in the morning, visitors began to arrive at the Ferry from Lawrence and the surrounding districts; every description of vehicle being brought into requisition for the occasion. We can safely say that never before have so many people from Lawrence visited the Beaumont in one day. The morning was rather showery, hut as the day advanced fine bracing weather followed, quite a KreUcf from the winds of the previous day. Although every one was thoroughly disgusted wi"Ji the class of sports offered for their amus&ment, yet the ride to and from, free from d\ist, a^d a pleasant ramble by the river side or through the different fruit gardens, amply compensated, many for other deficiencies. Thfc few wlq visited the race course soon wended their way uxck to the Ferry, leaving on the course only those\-ho were actually interested in the racing. No -. ccidents worthy of mention occurred either on t, c outward or return journey, most of tho plca^e-seekers returning" to their homes before dusk. The following is a resume of the day^aeing ;—; — Maiden Plate, of 15 sov3. Di&o nee) ij. mile ; weight for. age. Mr. A. Carlaw's Eambler (Quiv) 1 „ J. This concluded tlie programme ; and in justice to the stewards, ■wo must say that the lack of amusement was no fault of theirs. A liberal programme was offered by them, and it was no fault of theirs if there was no one to compete for the money. Messrs. Cowap, Hills, and Wood gave every satisfaction as handicappers, and in various other matters connected with the meeting. Mr. John Michael officiated as starter, and Mr. G. Rogers as clerk of the course.
