ANNUAL EXAMINATION OF EVANS FLAT SCHOOL.
(From a Correspondent.) Our Government, in their wisdom and liberality, have brought education (so far as ( it is possible at present) to every man's door #j consequently, there are many schools amongst the mountains and gullies of the province - which are not known to the public, and which I •are not heard of except upon these annual occasions. They have not that prominence j which offers au inducement to clergymen or other visitors. There are none of the "upper ten" to patronise these institutions, or to hold up the hands of the teacher. Their only patrons are the plodding, hard-working •eons of toil ; and yet the schools, as a whole, prosper under the patronage of the fathers and the mothers of the children. One of these isolated schools I came across on Wednesday last, in the course of my travels; for, to let your readers know, lam one of the firm of Brown, Jones and Robinson, and you can call me Brown, if you like. Well, it happened to be the day of their ■annual examination. I found 37 children present. There were also present: — Mr. Harraway, Chairman of the School Committee; Messrs. Brooks and David Evans, members of Committee ; Mr. M'Lelland, Blue Spur; and eerersX af the mothers of the children. mented the scholars on their progress and proficiency since' the present teacher had the oversight' of the school. He believed that Mr. Duthie'was an 'earnest and painstaking teacher, and he had -great pleasure in proposing a vote of thanks to the teacher. A cordial vote of thanks was also proposed to the ladies. The children then repaired td the playground, where an ample' spreacl was provided by the following ladies: — Mesdames M'Millan, Harraway, Brooks,' Munro, Duthie, Hopkins, and Smith. The Committee are now erecting a new school arid sehoolhouse. Through the kindness of the Wesleyan body, they have had the use of their chapel for a school ever since the school commenced until now.
