Correspondence.

(To the Editor.)

Sib,— l have heard of a king-ridden people and priest-ridden people, but it seems to be Reserved to Lawrence to be Mayor-ridden. What, Bir, is the meaning of the unbusinesslike nonsense of which the Town Council are guilty in delaying the erection of the grand Town Hall that was ushered in with such, a loud sound of trumpets, as something that would put all previous municipal matters (water works included) in the shade ? Tho Mayor and Councillors seem to be playing hide and seek, like a parcel of silly children. Now, the Mayor will and the Councillors won't. Next day, the Councillors will and the Mayor won't. Is it not a fact that the whole difficulty lies in a selfish desire on the part of the Mayor that the wood-work shall be constructed of inferior timber ? Is it also a fact that the municipal correspondence is confined to the pocket of the Mayor, and is not even laid on the table for consideration ? Really, it is time that Mr. Mayor^underatood that the public interests of Lawrence are not to be sacrificed or even rendered subservient to those of a private character. Six months ago, £2000 was borrowed at six per cent, to build this precious town hall, consequently £60 interest has been lost — thanks to the fruitless squabbles and undignified conduct of the Mayor and Councillors. This must be paid out of our rates. Why do not the ratepayers hold a meeting, and call upon them to do their work or resign ? Oh for a Cromwell, to send them all packing with a " Begone ! Get ye hence ! Give place to better men ! " — Yours indignantly, A Disgusted Ratbpayeb.
