WAITAHUNA BOARD OF WARDENS.

The Board met at the Golden Age Hotel on Saturday, the 16th instant. The members present were: — Messrs. Eadie, Ryan, Bushe, and Craig. A memorial from certain miners and Bottlers at Manuka Creek was received, complaining of the trespassing of Mr. W. H. Miller's sheep, which, the petitioners stated, "might one day destroy our gardens and the grass around our homesteads." The Secretary was instructed to call the attention of the Ranger to the matter. Licenses for depasturing stock were granted to tittf following applicants : — W. Davison, J. Ettwardß, W. May, J> Stewart, Wright Low, Thos. Scott, Samuel Bidgood, R. Miller, R. Hamilton, M. Higgins, D. Clarke, J. Hills, W. Smellie, G. Milne, J. Ingram, J. Cameron, J. Quin, F. Oudaille, W. Muir, J. Bulfin, E. Hickson, R. Sutherland. An application from Sutherland and Poison for a license to depasture 1000 sheep was refused. The following letter from the Goldfields Secretary, in answer to a communication from the Board, was read : — . , " Goldfields Office, "Dunedin, December, 5, 1873. "Sir, — I have the honor to acknowledge receipt of your letter of the 26th ultimo, intimating that the opinion of the Board of Wardens of Waitahuna Depasturing District is advfrse to the proposal of the Government to lease 2000 or 3000 acres of land near Mr. Miller's, and to express my regret that the Board cannot concur with the views of the Government in this respect, as it is of opinion that it would be for the interests of the district — the lessee being required to fence the land bo as to teep the sheep off the commonage ; and from the evidence before the Go* vernment, this can only be done by a boundary fence, to be erected as proposed. " I need not point out to yftu the injury to cattle owners if sheep are allowed to run upon the commonage intended for miners and others ; and the land referred to is so situated that unless the remedy we propose is carried out, with a view to the final settlement of the dispute, the annoyance complained of will continue to exist. " I have the honor to be, &c, "Horace Bastings."
