At the Pier — Ships, Rokeby Hall, Otago, May Queen; barque, Lady Agues. In the Stream — Ships, Peter Denny, Doyer Castle, Wild Duck, Lady Jocelyn ; barques, Columbus, Cesarewitch j brig, Ziska> The Christian M'Ausland arrived at the Otago Heads on Thursday, and signalled "All's well." The ship Wild Duck, 735 tons, Captain Baillie, weighed anchor en the morning of the 18th instant, and proceeded to sea in tow of the tug G-eelong, -and got away with. a. fine wind from, the S.W., which would soon .take her clear of our coast on her eastern journey. In connection with #iis , shig, our • weavingdock has proved more ppportunethan to any other amongst the many which have taken advantage of its accomodation. As all are mm *ware, this. sbi£ was onherwav from
Adelaide to London, laden with, wheat, and having been caught in a very heavy gale a few days out from her port of departure, and her cargo being very solid weight, she received, a general strain* -• As tiie captain djd not at first find that she was soifedly injured^he continued his course ; bu6 when nearing our land, he ascertained' that his vessel ytas making very much, water, and decided to run up for Port' Chalmers, that he ipight ascertain w^at Jiad been the nature of his mishap, and have it remedied. Before reaching our heads, his vessel was found to be leaking at the rate of 12in. per hour. On entering he had her cargo taken out, and then it was found that the leakage was generally over the whole ship rather than confined to any particular spot, so that the Graving-dock p~roved itself a boon to him. Taking advantage of it, he had his ship thoroughly repaired, and again made seaworthy in a manner that would have been impossible by any other means. She is therefore away again, as good and seaworthy as ever, and after the renovation received will no doubt make a good passage to London. Messrs Jackson Brothers have just finished building two fine clinker-built boats for the Teviot. Their dimensions are both alike — total length 30ft. 6in. beam 7ft. 6in. and depth 3ft. 4in. They will each be capable of carrying about eight tons, and are for Mr. Francis Tubman. They will be conveyed to their upon waggons. They are strong ''and well finished, "and reflect credit on their Guilders. They were taken to Dunedin by the train. The Imperial authorities are looking very sharply after traders in the South Seas, in order that the provisions of the Polynesian Labourers Act may not be evaded. Anqther prize has been brought into port, the charge against the vessel being that she had Islanders on board not mentioned in the ship's articles. The Cleveland Bay Express states: — "The Aurora," brig, in charge of Lieutenant Malan, one of the officers of the Sandfly, a Government vessel of war, arrived in Cleveland Bay on Monday, the 6th instant, having on bqard a valuable cargo of beche-de-mer, pearl shell, tortoiseahell, &c, &c, in all roughly estimated as worth £9000. The defence of the captain is that he left Sydney in November, 1871, and consequently before the Act under which the Beizure was made was in force ; and not having had communication in any way with Sydney since that date, he was ignorant as to this law having come into existence." — Brisbane Courier, October 22. A strong south-west wind has cdntinuel now for three days in succession, and yesterday it was very cold and accompanied by showers of rain. It is most likely that weather like this prevails beyond our locality, and will be the means of bringing some of those vessels now due ijO our coast. Those which may be considered now due are tho Christian M'Ausland, from London, 79 days out ; the Caller-ou and Zealandia, from London, 73 days out ; and the Jessie Readman, from Glasgow, 75 days out. Of course, even yet we cannot feel anxious about any of them, as none are overdue. Even^ if the Christian M'Ausland were now to come in, we would consider her passage a good one ; yet not the one to be expected of that ship ; but a few days' quick favorable wind, suoh as has prevailed during the last few weeks, would bring a ship a great many miles. We may, therefore, be on the look out for some arrival. These four vessels leaving so close upon one another -will be a good chance for an interesting race along the many days' passage. The more inter ?st will be thrown into it if all are trimmed about alike. The agents of tho Albion Shipping Company were advised by wire on Thursday of the arrival of the Wild Deer at London on 11th October ; also of the sailing of the City of Dunodin from Glasgow for this port on 27th September, with 173 emigrants ; and <Jf the Margar.'t Galbraith, also froan Glasgow for this port, on 39th October. - • . The Mongol, is to leave London for Dunedin direct on the 12th. December. She will bring immigrants, and should bring them in most seasonable tim.s fox harvest work. The Golden Age will leave Dunedin Jetty at 2 o'clock this day and Sunday, taking excursionists to. visit the Lady Jocelyn, and for a cruise round the shipping at the Port. A Southland > paper says :: — '• Spencer's Island, in Bluff harbour has become the property of Dr. Grigor. The suitability of this Island far quarantine- purposes i& generally acknowledged, and 1 the General Government are blameworthy for not having secured it, the desbability of doing so having been repeatedly brought under their notice." We learn that the medical officer of the Lady Jocelyn has reported that two cases of diptheria have terminated fatally. By the s.s Claud Hamilton, on her last trip, a bank draft for £124 10s was remitted by subscribers in dunedin, to Melbourne "in aid of the fnnd for benefitting the widow of the late. Captain I^ouse. The amount of money amraJly disbursed at the Bay of Islands by foreign whalesbips, is stated by the New Zealand Herald's correspondent to be not less than £12,000. The Dover Castle, for London, was towed out to sea on Thursday,
