He states that ho crossed the aukati, but was stopped by the outposts ; but eventually succeeded in getting to see Te Kooti, and had a long conversation with him. He says he is anxious for peace — that he haA3s£ten applied to the Government to send him home to England, to be tried there, for he does not think, that he would get a fair trial here, as the people are so much incensed against him. He denies being guilty of murders, and he says that the murders and atrocities perpetrated by his followers were against his wish. Te Kooti is mentally as aente as ever, but physically he is quite gone, through drink. All the Hauhaus are mad for rum, and will make any sacrifice for it. The cultivation is good, the crops are heavy, and Te Kooti's house is well supplied with sheets, blankets, and linen. Te Kooti is well dressed ; he wears sfmilitary frock coat. He offered to send his revolvers to Mr. M'Lcan as a sign of peace. The correspondent speaks highly of Mr, Mackay's exertions, but says they have been thwarted by the Native Department, who fear his success. A large number of Hauhaus visited Alexandra to try to find out what Tawhiao wanted. They have been spending all their money on rum ; they are great drunkards.
