TUAPEKA MINING- RESERVE.

(To the Editor.) Sir, — It must be very gratifying to tie miners in this district to know that there is yet one pliilantropist living amongst them — viz., Mr. John Hogg. His advertisement in your last issue informs tha miners that they can prospect upon the goldfields reserve occupied by him. 1 He must think the mining fraternity a very simple minded class of people, and that their rights and possessions are at a very low ebb, when they have to ask his permission to work upon their own land j and, as one belonging to that class, T would ask Mr. Hogg, what right he has to enclose part of the goldfiolds, depriving the miners? cows of the right to the grass, which, means depriving the miners' children (if their milk ? It appears strange to me how the miners tiown the flat allowed it, more especially when they are so hemmed in for cattle privileges. His advertisement may in the end mean something else ; and I would advise the miners of ■ Tuapeka to keep their weather eye open to their rights ; and I have no doubt, when the Beaumont water race runs along the head of Mr Hogg's own land, you will see hundreds of men sluicing these spurs, for it is only the want of water at a liigh level that prevents it now.— l am, &c , Miner.
