WAITAHUNA BOARD OF WARDENS.
(To the Editor.) Sib, — If I am correctly informed, the election for a board of wardens for the Waitabuna depasturing district has caused a good deal of dissatisfaction among the settlers. The proclamation states the voter must appear in person and produce his qualifications. A good number of the settlers had banded their leases to the Q-overn-ment to have their land brought under the deferred payment system of the Waste Lands Act, 1872. and as they could not produce their qualifications were not allowed to vote. Several settlers bad travelled a distance of five miles to vote, taking with them the receipt for their last half-year's rent, thinking that a sufficient qualification, but the Returning Officer would not receive it as such. As there is a probability of a similar election in the Tuapeka district, I would suggest to the Government the advisability of dispensing with the miners' right and business license qualifications, and substituting the depasturing license instead. lam sure if that course were adopted, it would give satisfaction to both miners and settlers, as none but stockowners would be interested with the election of wardens. It would also serve as a check upon parties taking out miners' rights for the purpose of qualifying them to vote for furthering their own interested objects. — I am, &c, Improvement.
