LIVE IT DOWN. "When auld wives clack, an' gomerils jeer, An' meddlin' billies interfere, Ne'er fash your head — your duty's clear : Live it down. When scandal-mongers blot your name, And try to dim your honest fame, E'en let them — theirs will be the shame : Live it down When venomed malice plots and flees, Wi' tail like heavy-laden bee's Some Pale-faced hypocrite to please : Live it down. When folks, whose only faith is pence — Poor substituts for common sense — Dare to deride wi' leering glance : Live them down. When ingrates filled with venomous fire, Wi' cronies like themselves conspire, To drag your virtues through the mire : Live them down. When hypocrites wi v some grimace, Wi' upturned cc' and lengthenedface, Condemn your deeds as scant o' grace : Live them down. Aye keep your conscience calm and clear, The sacred laws of Heaven revere ; Tho' bigots fight and sceptics sneer : Live them down.
