MOUNT BENGER ELE TION AND WESLEYAN METHODISM.

{To the Editor.) Sir, — In justice to Mr. Ireland, whose name with regard to his religious persuasion has, I think, been very ruthlessly dragged before the public by your correspondent " Auti- Humbug," allow me to state Mr. Ireland is not a Wesley an — never waa — and I do not imagine that he ever will be. I believe that Mr. Ireland has been in the habit, of late of attending a Wesley an place of worship, but that does not make him a Wesleyan. 1 am quitrt sure that if Mr. Ireland was a Wesleyan, he would be bold fco confess it ; and. I write this not so much to contradict the assertion made by your correspondent as to draw attention to the singularly inappropriate signature which he has chosen. What if the Wesleyan minister at Teviot did say that Mr. Ireland :i might be the means of converting every member of the Council"? What has such a statement (made, be it remembered, in Mr. Ireland's absence) to do with Mr. Ireland ? Suppose I express an opinion that the return of James Macandrew as Superintendent may have the effocfc of converting the moon into green choose, what has that to do with Mr. Macandrew ? Is not the retailing and publication of such " twaddle" utter, and not anti-humbug ? — I am, &c, Civis.
