ANOTHER MARE'S NEST.
(To the Editor.)
Sir, — Somebody has been practising on public credulity by setting afloat exaggerated statements concerning the land applied for by Mr. James Smith. It is currently reported that this land comprises 2000 acres, including the bush near Klingst's, and that it takes in auriferous ground, and also mining properties. Now, sir, these statements are untrue, as can be ascertained by anj'one who will take the trouble to go to the Survey Office. The area is only about 250 or 300 acres, and the nearest point is fully five miles away from Klingst's. There is not a square yard of auriferous land within it, and the only mining properties are two races, which are specially reserved from sale, together with seven feet on each side of each race, and also free right of entrance and exit at all times. The truth is, that tho present boundary between Smith's run and the commonage at the Crookburn cannot bo fenced, owing to the nature of the ground, and the proposed sale is only for the purpose of enabling Mr. Smith to erect a dividing fence at his own expense, so as to put a stop to the squabbles Let ween squatter and cattle owners at Tuapeka Mouth. And any one who makes any diffieultv about it will be no friend to the settlers in this locality. — I am, &c, True Bill.
