MOUNT BENGER ELECTION. (To the Editor.)

Snt, — Seeing that Mr. G. Mackay is being so ably defended by "Elector" and also by another letter from himself, but signed " J" instead of "G-," saying that my report was inaccurate, I must flatly contradict him. It will be seen by the report of the meeting, Mr. G-. Mackay has not cleared himself to the opinion of the general public ; but that he did, at the meeting of the Progress Committee, as chairman, press Mr. Beighton to come forward, and I should say that moat men who would do so would feel themselves morally bound to support him ; but moral courage was lacking. When Mr. Mackay did rise to speak, his voice was so low that you could only pick up a word now and then. Everyone who has read the report (unless the Ireland party) say it waa a most impartial report, and almost word for word. As to " Elector's " statement as to the show of hands, that is falso. There was a show of bands, but it was impossible to say who bad the show ; but, as Jock Graham had the show of hands at Dunedin for the Superintendency, I will dye "Elector" that part to boast of. — Tours, &c, YOUB OWN COBRESPONDENT.

The " Globe " having been called in question for stating that druggists realised enormous profits put the matter to test by purchasing from different druggists in London a simple prescription, in each case consisting of 24 drops of p'uae sulphuric acid, 19drs. of syrup of poppies, and sufficient water to make the mixture up to 8 oz. To this were added two compound rhubarb pills. The mixture required no nicety of dispensing, and the pills are such as are always kept in stock. The actual cost of the whole, including bottle, label, paper string, sealing wax, and pill-box, has been estimated for us by a competent authority to be barely more than fivepence. For this prescription we (" Globe ") have prices running at Bd, Is, Is 2d, la 6d f 2s, 2s 4d, 2s Od, and 3s.
