MR. GILLIES AND THE ISLAND BLOCK SALE.
(To the Editor.) Sltt, — On my return home I observe the following in your report of Mr. Nicholson's meeting an Horseshoe Bend. In reference to the sale of the Island Block, he is reported to have said that "in a meeting of the Executive, Mr. Reid moved that the application should be thus far granted, namely, that the land should be put to auction for sale. This motion was carried against an amendment from Mr. Gillies, thai; the whole should be sold in one block ; but, thanks to the presence of aeveral persons interested in the application being on the committee, all this was suppressed in the report." Now, first, the statement is a gross fabrication. Second, Mr. Nicholson not being a member of the Executive, I ask who waa his informant? Thiid, some at least of the committee who examined and re]>orfced on that subject were my bitterest political opponents. I make no comment. — Yours truly, John L. Gillies. Tokomairiro, 20th June.
