MEETING OF MR. NICHOLSON'S SUPPORTERS.
A meeting of Mr. Nicholson's supporters was convened at Roxburgh on the evening of Thursday last. Owing to some miscoijoeption, it' was currently be. lieved that Mr. Nicholson intended ad-
dressing the electors in person, so that a very large attendance was the result. Mr. Grant stated that while regretting so many persons should have teen put to inconvenience by a mistake, he was glad to have an opportunity of stating Mr. Nicholson's intentions in conducting his canvass. He asked no man to pledge his vote to him — all that he desired was, that none should pledge themselves to any of his opponents. He desired a fair field, and no favor, and considered any pledge given before all the candidates wei*e heard absolutely null and void. (Hoar, hear, from Mr. Ireland). The speaker animadverted on the way the district had been over-run with canvassers carrying about requisitions, as grossly unfair, and virtually counteracting whatever benefit might be expected to result from the ballot. As so many electors were present, he would refer to a much more important matter than the election of a new Provincial Council, he meant the election of a Superintendent. He believed Every man in the Mount Benger district was a cordial supporter of Mr. Macandrew, whose opponent, although no doubt a most able and convincing writer upon manure and kindred subjects, had no qualities to recommend him to a goldfields constituency. (Hear and cheers.) Mr. Macandrew's return might be considered as certain ; still they were not to neglect registering their votes upon the polling day, as this would not only prevent mistakes, but as a mark of confidence in him and his policy. (Loud cheers.) The people of Mount Bsnger had blundered fearfully at the last elections, and were men enough to own their mistake and do their utmost to retrieve their error. ("Loud applause .) On the motion of Mr. Ireland, a vote of thanks was accorded to Mr. Grant, and the proceedings closed .
Mr. Nicholson has held successful meetings in all portions of Mount Benger proper. He visits Switzers this week. In sporting circles he holds first place in the betting. ________
