LAWRENCE TOWN COUNCIL.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Town Council was held on Tuesday evening last. Present — The Mayor, and Councillors Coverlid, Hay, Hill Walker and Meyer. t A letter from Mr. Ferguson, bringing before the Council the urgent necessity of having a footpath made aloug Irvinestreet, was read. lie expressed his belief that rather than submit to the present disgraceful state of the road the holders of sections fronting it, would contribute partly towards the expense. After some discussion, Cr. Coverlid moved that the footpath

be constructed, and that tenders be called for the work. Cr. Hay Beconded the motion,' which was carried. A letter from Mr. S. A. Miller, offering to draw a design of a Town Hall for the Corporation, if supplied with the necessary information as to size, &c, was received. The Town Clerk was instructed to answer Mr. Miller's letter, thanking him. A letter from Mr. D. Whittet, Inspector of Works for the Corporation, asking for extra remuneration, owing to the duties of his office entailing more time than he anticipated, was received. Cr. Hay, while quite agreeable to increase the amount decided upon being given to Mr. Whittet, thought it advisable not to do so until the whole of the works were completed. He would move that the letter lie on the table for future consideration. — Carried. A letter from Mr. Jamison was read, in which he complied with the wish of the Council to construct a retaining wall on the boundary of his property on the Beaumont road. The Council agreed to have the filling up of the road done as soon as is was required. Cr. Coverlid moved that the owners of property on the Beaumont road, be requested to build a retaining wall in order that the street may be properly formed, and that in the event of any of them refusing, the Council to undertake the work, and charge the parties with the expense. Cr. Hay seconded the motion, which was carried. From the discussion which took place on this subject, it appears the Council have power to enforce the performance of the work referred to. A letter from Mr. Nicolson, with reference to the map of the town of Lawrence, which he had agreed to sell to the Corporation, was read and considered. Mr. Nicolson states that since deciding to sell the map, Mr. Adams had raised objections to its removal from the Survey Office, and that the matter would require to be investigated. Mr. Nicolaon, however, oifers to make a map on the same scale, which would settle all disputes. A letter on the same subject, from Mr. Adams, was also read. He states that as the map was made on Government paper, during office hours, and with his assistance, he decidedly objectedtoitssale. He considered it a Government map, and he had written to the Chief Surveyor about it. If he (the Chief Surveyor) agreed to the sale, then he (Mr. Adams) would claim one-half of the purchase money, seeing it was by the joint laborof himself and Mr. Nicholson thatthe map was constructed. Cr. Walker moved : " That Mr. Nicolson's letter be received, and the Town Clerk be instructed to order a map of the same kind from him." Cr. Hay, in seconding the proposition, said it seemed (jto him very strange that Mr. Adams should claim part of the purchase money if the map is Government property. The Council had nothing to do with Mr. Adams in the matter, but he seconded the motion to prevent any difficulties arising The motion was carried. A letter was read from Mr. Brown, acknowledging receipt of one from the Town Clerk, enclosing a resolution in which the Council asked his and Mr. Basting'^ co-operation in getting an Ordinance introduced into the Provincial Council vesting the management of the Lawrence cemetery in the Municipal Council. Mr. Rrown said that in consequence of the late crisis in the Provincial Council, he had not been able to attend to their request ; bnt he hoped he would have an opportunity of carrying out the wishes of the Corporation at the next me'tlng of the Provincial Council. The letter was received, and the Town Clerk instructed to reply, thanking Mr. lirown. (The remainder of the Council report , we are compelled to hold over.)
