THE B ALD HILL FLAT SLUDGE CHANNEL.

(To tU Editor.) Sib, — I find by perusing your paper an article on the formation of a Sludge Channel Company, which I believe will be a great benefit to the district, and no doubt, if carried out, will give employment to a great number of miners. In most mining speculations there are difficulties in the way, and no doubt it will be the same in the construction of the sludge channel in question ; but I have heard from good authority that Mr. Hugh Crossan and Mr. J. R. Kemp have made proposals to the the promoters, which will be brought before a public meeting, which will be held to consider the matter. I can speak from what I know of the locality, and I am certain there will be four year's work without intefering with any of the farmers on the Flat, who by that time, no doubt, will turn their attention to mining themselves. Many say why did the miners not take np the Flat before % The reply is because they had not the resources at command they have at the present time. What was their water supply then ! A few paltry heads, not sufficient for one claim. At the present time there is one of the largest water races in the province within a few yards of the ground, which is to carry 16 heads of water from one of the best supplies in the country ; and if the company carries the enterprise out systematically it will be an immense benefit to the district. — I am, &c, Observer. Bald Hill Flat, April 4.
