LAWRENCE TOWN COUNCIL.

The usual meeting of the Council was | held in the Council Clambers on Monday* the 31st ult. Present —The Mayor, and Councillors Hay, Hill, Walker, Meyer, Hayes, and Coverlid. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. I A letter from C. W. Adams was re- : ceived. The tenders for ;he Beaumont road were then considered. On the motion of Cr. Hay, seconded by Or. Hill, the tender of Downie and De tert being the lowest was accepted. The amount of the tender was £592. A letter from Mr. John Downie applying for an allowance fc>r extras on his late contract on the Wet.ierstones road, was received and referred to the Public Works Committee. A letter from the Under-Secretary was received. Letters from Messrs Oliver and Ulph, and Briscoe and Co., re price of water pipes, were also received. The following report of the Public Works Committee was received :—: — Your Committee have to report that, in accordance with instructions from your Council, they have communicated with two large firms in Dmiedin as to the probable cost of water pipes for extension in this town. The replies are decided as to the advisability of postponing such work for a time, as the probability of a fall to the extent of 25 per cent, in the price of iron is confidently anticipated. At the present quotation, however, the approximate cost of laying a 4 inch pipe to the culvert at the hospital would amount to about £475. Your Committee have had a covering of gravel an.it approaches made to the bridge in lonastreet, at a cost of £3. The negotiations for land or an increase of money for the Beaumont road contract have produced no favorable reply from the Government. Your Committee has made a truck for the use of" the prisoners in Lancaster-street ; also a tramway has been laid, and the work appears to be progressing most favorably. A stone culvert has been substituted for the pipespwhich will, however, be available for other work. Cr. Hill moved,' and Cr. Hayes seconded, " That the Public Works Committee be empowered to employ a tradesman to complete the culvert in Lancaster- , street. The motion was carried. Cr. Walker presented a petition from ratepayers, asking that a portion of Ard-rossan-stre'et be formed and gravelled. The petition was received. The following accounts were received and referred to the various Committees :—: — George Jeffery, £2 ; Harold Pyke, £5 9s ; Thos. Buckley, £8 Cr. Coverlid moved, and Cr. Hayes seconded, "That Mr. Bastings' offer of trees be accepted with thanks." Cr. Hayes moved, " That the petition presented by Cr. Walker, be referred to the Public Works Committee". — Carried. On the motion of Cr. Hill, the Public Works Committee were requested to advertise for a competent person to superintend the work on the Beaumont road. — Carried. Cr. Coverlid in accordance with his notice of motion, moved, " That all tho footpaths in Ross Place, Peel-street, and Whitehaven-street, be supplied with a coating of gravel." Cr. Hayes seconded the motion, and it was carried. Cr. Hay moved, and Cr. Coverlid seconded, " That tenders be called for gravelling Whitehaven-street, from the school to the hospital gate, with six inches. of gravel from the centre. — Carried. Ct. Hill moved, and,Cr. Hayes seconded, "That Peel-street be gravelled with four inches of gravel as far as the post-office, and that the Public Works Committee be requested to bring up a report as to the desirability of forming - and metalling Peel-street from the postoffice to Lismore-street." — Carried. Cr. Walker moved, and Cr. [lay seconded, " That a portion of Stranraerstreet be formed and gravelled three inches, more or less ; also, that Kilmar-nock-street be gravelled with six inches of gravel in the centre." — Carried.

Finance Report No. 11 was received and adopted. The meeting then adjourned.
