Dunedin, April 2nd, 4.34 p.m. The captain of the Forfarshire has been fined £25 for a breach of Passenger Act. The s.s. Luna, which left Manakau for Wellington direct on Monday, has not yet arrived. Fears are entertained of her safety. Chief Justice Arney, Mr. Yogel, and Mr. M'Lean are on board. The Wonga Wonga has arrived at Auckland, and brings English dates to the 26th March. New Zealand Fives, 104 ; Sixes, 113. Earl Kimberly telegraphs that he intends to introduce a bill removing all obstruction to .intercolonial reciprocity. The Nebraska arrived at Auckland last night, and brings London dates to March 4th. Noxe, clerk to the confederates in the Bank of England forgeries, has made startling revelations. Jay, Cook, and M'Culloch, American houses, have been defrauded to the amount of L 350,00 0; Rothschild, L 200,000 ; a large amount to Baring and others. The total frauds are estimated to amount to two millions sterling. The Corona, an Australian clipper, lay at anchor within three hundred yards of where the Northfleet disaster occurred. Neither the tsrrible shock, the cries of the distressed passengers, nor the rockets continually tired from the deck of the sinking ship, could arouse the watch who was asleep on the deck of the Corona. Mr. M'Glashan denies that it is his intention to resign. Wellington, April 1. The " Independent," tnis morning asserts that Dr. Featherston has given Messrs. Farnell, Birch, and Seaton salaries of L7OO a-year each as emigration agents, and strongly protests against such expenditure, declaring it to be in violation of the understandiug on which they went home, and entirely without the authority of the Government. * ~ (From the " Daily Times.") Wellington, March 31st. The Camille arrived from Newcastle on Saturday. Captain Stafford brought a •number of valuable plants for the Acclimatisation Society. Chrxstchurch, March 31st. The Hon. Mr." Stafford has purchased Lansdowne Estate, near Christchurch. It is reported that he will build 1 mansion, and settle there. The Volunteer Encampment of the Rifle Association Meeting will be held on Saturday, JSunday, and Tuesdiy in' Easter Week,
An inquest has ' been held on the body of the man who was killed in the tunnel. Tho evidence shows that the man went into the tunnel, and fell asleep in a sitting position. The engine, in passing struck his head with the iron step, killing him instantly. Grahamstown, March 31st. A fire which occurred this morning destroyed the Shellback Hotel and four houses. A man named Job Tyler was brought up before the Resident Magistrate's Court and remanded for a week, on a charge of incendiarism in connection with the fire. The damage done is extensive. Auckland, March 31st. Mr. Saunders reports Caledonians at £16 5s ; Thames, £5 15s ; Albion, £4 12s 6d ; Bank of New Zealand, £17 8s ; Inverness,- Cs Bd ; Harbor View, £1 3s ; Otago, £1 2s ; City of London, 10s ; Bright Smile £2 6s. The " Thames Advertiser " blames Mr. Lemon for the present condition of the Telegraph Department, and says the blame should jrest on him. He had ample time and opportunities to make it meet all reasonable demands, but it is in bad repute from end of one New Zealand to the. other. The "Advertiser" pretests against Mr. Lemon's making scapegoats of others. The Luna left the Manukau for Wellington this morning with the Acting Governor and Messrs. Yogel and M'Lean on board. The Lady Bird has arrived at the Manukau with later English and Australian news. She brings 90 tons of cargo for Wellington, and 130 tons for other ports.
