Wellington, March 17. At a meeeting of the shareholders of the proposed Coal Company, held to-daj r , a draft prospectus was approved of, and the provisional directors were instructed to register the company as soon as 1,500 shares are formally applied for. Upwards of 1,600 shares have been informally promised. A letter from proposed Greymouth shareholders was read, but the meeting resolved that their demands could sot be acceded to. The company proposed to confine their operations to carrying coal, not mining for it. - March 17. Heavy rain is falling, with every likelihood of its continuing. Should it do so, it will interfere with the demonstrations on the Governor's departure to-morrow. The Southern Cross and the Ntzo Zealand Herald publish details of the proposed electric telegiaph cables to New Zealand, proDosals are to construct a cable from Australia to New Zealand, and another from Normanton to Singapore. Three % colonies — New Zealand. New South Wales, and Queensland — will give a guarantee of five per cent, upon a capital of a million, which is equal to three per cent, upon what the cables will actually cost. If the scheme is ratified by the several Parliaments, New Zealand will pay L 16,700 per annum, but the receipts from the line, when working, will almost ejual that amount. The guarantee is to be for thirty-three years. A twenty word message from New Z- aland to Australia is not to exceed fifteen shillings, and every extra word is to be ninepence. Each twenty words from Normanton to Singapore is not to exceed forty shillings for the first two years ; afterwards not to exceed thirty-five shillings. Extra words two shillings each. The two cables are to be constructed simultaneously. Four weeks yearly will be allowed for repairs, and L 12,000 per annum be allowed to cover all expenses for the year ; all receipts above that to go towards reducing the guarantee. The farewell ball to the Governor aud Lady Bowen, last night, was a great success. 250 perseas were present^ The Chief • Justice presided. The Governor spoke of the warm affection entertained for him and family in Auckland. In the Sonth, it was respect for his office, but in Auckland the feeling was personal. He leaves this afternoon. A quantity of petroleum, from the East Coast, has been refined, and is described as superior oil. Wellington, March 18. The Wangauui Regatta and the Patea Paces took place yesterday. Both were very successful. *? The Waitotara Natives settled the cattle rescue case by paying damages. The Christchurch agent for the Press Association is dismissed for sending a distorted telegram, re Mr Reeyes's meeting at Selwyn on the fth inst. It is said that Mr Sewell will stand for Lyttelton, Auckland, March 18. The Governor left this evening for the Bay of Islands, where he will uncover Tamati Waka's monument, and proceed thence to Melbourne. The farewell demonstration was a great success. The procession included the Volunteer Corps, Fire Brigade, Friendly Societies, Ac., and it was a splendid affair. Every window, balcony, and verandih, on both, sides of tb,e line of march, was crowded. It is estimated that l",Q00 or 12,000 people took part in tbe demonstration. The Mayor presented a farewell address to his Excellency at the wharf. A large number of yachts accompanied the steamer down the harbor, and a large party accompanies the Governor to the gay of Islands. Blu?f, March 19. Mr Calder's resignation of his seat is the Assembly appears in the Southland News this morning. He says he had forgotten the fact at the time, but finds that he is disqualified by his acceptance of a contract to supply the Government with sleepers tor the Canterbury railways. He regrets having to resign, as he considers the present aspect of public affairs to be not of an assuring character, and the future doubtful ; and further considers that the present political situation justified the course he took last session.
