A THREATENED NUISANCE.

(To the Editor.) Sir, — In walking up Gabriels Gully a few days ago, I felt shocked to see both sides of the footpath up the Gully thickly covered with a luxuriant growth, of thistles. lam shortsighted, and, therefore, don't know — as I could not see — how far the thistles have already spread ; but as far as my recollection serves me, there were no thistles, or comparatively few in this locality some two years ago. A3 you are probably aware, thistles become a very great nuisance if unchecked, and in some of the colonies their eradication has become a matter of sufficient importance to call for special legislation of a coercive kind, which ia strictly enforced in the agricultural districts. As it appeared to me that the thistles I refer to are not yet gone to seed, I think that by drawing your attention to the matter, I may be doing service to the public of the district, and knowing how much your paper is devoted to the welfare of the district in which it principally circulates, I feel that I need hardly apologise for troubling you with this communication. — I am, &c, Clodhopper.

The subscriptions for the purchase of ant organ for Trinity Church, Lawrence, we have been given to understand, amount to a respectable sum. Nearly enough to pay for the instrument has been already collected.
