OUR TOWN COUNCIL.

(To tlie Editor.) Sir, — In your last issue I observe that our civic rulers have been conducting themselves in a manner bordering on the unseemly. Considering that the citizens have entrusted the reputation of Lawrence into their hands, 1 think they ought not to venture too far beyond the calm unruffled seas of propriety. The casus belli on the occasion alluded to, seems to have been that a councillor took upon himself the undertaking of a contract which good taste alone should have prevented his intermeddling with. This is not the first instance of "irregularities," as such proceedings were euphemistically termed by a councillor, leading to confusion. It is well known that a recent law-auit in which the Corporation figured as defendants, and which cost the town a considerable sum, would not have been brought had the business of the Council been conducted in a regular niauner. I suggest that in future our worthy Mayor take adequate precautions against any of his team bolting—as colts are very apt to do. His Worship should see that the harness is properly put on, a kicking rope placed on the hind-quarters of the skittish members, and when on the box, he should put one foot on the brake and keep a good grip of the reius. Should he follow my advice, if he is anything of a driver, he ought to engineer the civic team safely over the rough road they have to travel, and keep it clear of all obstacles and impediments, in the shape of acts, ordinances, byelaws, and " irregularities."— Yours, truly, Cms. Lawrence, Jan. 28th.
